Full Credit For Being Alive

I don’t even know where to begin with telling you about my trip to Nosara. Because it was more than a trip, in the end. It was this thing, this experience, that became part of my own life, in a way that no trip ever has. It made me see a completely different way of living. No, not just see it, but really understand it, visualize it, anticipate myself living that way at some point in the future. I’ve gone on trips before, but this was the first one that really got under my skin.

Maybe it was the fact that I was sleeping at least nine hours a night. Maybe it was the scenery. Maybe it was the fact that I was relying completely on my body to do things that I never thought that I would be able to do. Whatever it was, something about that place made me so content that I finally, for once, turned off the constant whirring in my brain. Something about Nosara did the unthinkable — it made this high strung, anxiety prone, New York attorney relax.

And I saw people there who I knew had, several years before, felt the same way as me. People from all over the world who had left their former lives behind and set up shop by the ocean. The Dude and I went on a hike led by a 30-something former banker from Minnesota, who had moved to Nosara in October and whose wife was coming to join him after the first of the year. We had drinks with an older couple who both left their jobs in politics to start a yoga retreat. We took surfing lessons from a British student who was getting his master’s degree in oceanography and teaching on the side. We met people who had come to this place and fallen in love.

And we did too.
